Granny Square Summer Top has the most visitors and views on my website. I know many of you get confused about my pattern. It was my earlier shared free pattern where I’m still learning and improving on my pattern writing skills.
I’m happy to share another granny square top pattern with you all. Hope this one gives a better understanding on the joining part.
Is a one-size/free-size pullover.
Which can be matched with any type of outfit. Wear it alone with pants, a pullover on top of a dress, layering, and many more.
Materials
- Crochet Hook E Sizes 3.5mm
- Any Fingering Weight Yarn [ approx: 1250yards ]
- Measuring Tape
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
Gauge: In a square of 4 rows Pattern = 7cm X 7cm
Finishes Sizes: Bust/Underarm-56cm Lenght 40cm

I made this pullover with Scheepjess Whirlette purchased from Lazada Malaysia. Using almost 85% ball of 859-Rose & 1 and a half balls of 860-Ice.
If you wish to make the top bigger, you can increase the yarn weight and the crochet hook. This top is designed as an over-sizes pullover.
Top Construction
- This top is created with a total number of 49 granny squares.
- No special shaping requires.
- Squares are joined with the “joining as you go” with the border row.
- Top finished up with edge stitch along the bottom, sleeves openings, and neckline.

NOTES:
- 1st row of DC replaced with SC, CH1 instead of chain 2 for nicer finishes.
- When involve colour change, finished the last chain of the row with invisible join/seam method.
Granny Square Pattern
This top created using same pattern of granny square, but with 3 sets of different colours combination. 1 set of all white, 1 set of all red, 1 set of mixed white and red. The structure a little bit different at the end of the rows. Chart and Instruction as below.
Single Colour Square
ROW 1 :
Start with MR, (SLST, SC, CH1)as 1st DC, 11DC, SLST to the 2nd DC, note: the last slst is creating a top st of 1st DC. [12sts]

Two Colours Square
ROW 1 : Colour A
Start with MR, (SLST, SC, CH1)as 1st DC, 11DC, cut off yarn, with tapestry needle, invisible join to 2nd DC. [12sts]
note: the last invisible join is creating a top st of 1st DC.
ROW 2 : Colour B working on top of stitch below

The Number of Square For A Top
For this Granny Square Pull Over top, I designed it with 3 sets of Granny Square. I started with making the 4 rows of square quantities as per the chart above. Once obtain the overall total number of 79 squares, I joined them together as I crochet the 5th row aka border row (instruction below).
(A) Instruction without to join
ROW 5(A) : Colour B working at CH space below
A-Edge 1 :
SLST to any of the corners, SC at the same space, CH5, *SC at the next space, CH3* repeat *2times, SC at the next space, CH5, SC to the next corner space, CH6, SC at the same corner space [32sts]
A-Edge 2&3 :
CH5, *SC at the next space, CH3* repeat *2times, SC at the next space, CH5, SC to the next corner space, CH6, SC at the same corner space [31sts]
A-Edge 4 :

Note:
- Red colour dots indicated stitches or spots that to be slst when joining the square. *If you find difficulty to slst to the chain stitch, you can just slst to the chains space.
- Place the squares wrong side facing the wrong side when joining the square.

Once you had crocheted the total of 79 squares start joining as you crochet ROW 5(refer to instructions A & B page 4). Start from the back panel bottom, following the numbering as diagram beside. The Granny Square Type is shown in the legend.

Bottom Top & Both Sleeves Edge
These edge finishes are optional. You may skip these edge stitches.
Slst to any of square 1st corner space as the diagram shown above, SC at the same space, (2DC, PICOT, 2DC) at the CH5 space, SC at the next space, Ch1, PICOT, CH1, SC at the next space, Ch1, PICOT, CH1, SC at the next space, (2DC, PICOT, 2DC) at the CH5 space, SC at the next space, Ch1, PICOT, CH1, SC at the next space repeat* all-round the edge. Finish the last stitch after a PICOT st, cut off yarn, with tapestry needle invisible join to 1st SC.
Neckline Edge
Before we crochet the edge, the neckline openings are pretty wide and big. With the following 2 rows pattern, it will reduce the neckline opening.
ROW 1 :
Slst to any of square 1st corner space as the diagram shown above, SC at the same space, CH1, < ( SC, CH1, SC, CH1, SC ) to the next CH5 space, Ch1, *SC to the next space, CH1* repeat * 2times ( SC, CH1, SC, CH1, SC ) to the next CH5 space, Ch1, *SC to the next space, CH1* repeat * 1time> repeat < > all-round the edge. Slst to the 1st SC.
ROW 2 :
RSC on every CH1 space below all-around & cut-off yarn.
Weave in all the yarn ends, and your GRANNY SQUARE PULLOVER is DONE!
