Today is Mints Canteen soft launch day. A cafe opening in Tamarind Square, Cyberjaya.
A cafe founder by my friend’s MP Chan.
My idea to make her aprons come in a very last minute, as I totally no idea what to buy her. So a quick and easy apron yet trendy pattern is born.
I wanted to make her 4 aprons, as she might have 3 workers but I only able to make her 2. Supplier don’t have enough yarn for the colour I picked to match Mints Canteen logo. But off course main point is, I don’t have enough time. So for today 2 aprons first. 😅
Materials
- Any yarn weight (I’m using DK, cotton yarn)
- Any crochet hook sizes (I’m using 5.5mm)
- Stitch maker
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Gauge : no gauge swatch require for this apron.
The Stitch Pattern / The design
Ok. I have less time frame, but I don’t wish to make an apron look plain. Something textured but not complicated to crochet. So I go with lemon peel stitch. This textured stitch pattern is super easy, where it only works in alternative of single crochet & double crochet.
To avoid long standing stitch when turning, we will be start the row with single crochet and end with double crochet.
Understanding the stitch pattern, when we see single crochet below the row, we make double crochet on the stitch. Simple right?
No gauge swatch, no stitch count, we will be measure the piece as we crochet.
This pattern will be working on 3 parts.
- The strap
- The bottom
- The pocket
The Pattern
Strap
Row 1 – Chain 3, single crochet at 2nd chain, double crochet at the next, chain 1 turn.
Row 2 – Single crochet, [double crochet, single crochet] at the last stitch. Chain 2, turn.
Row 3 – Double crochet, single crochet, [double crochet & single crochet] at the last stitch. Chain 2 turn.
Row 4 – Double crochet, single crochet, double crochet, [single crochet & double crochet] at the last stitch. Chain 1 turn.
Row 5 – *Single crochet, double crochet* X2, [single crochet & double crochet] at the last stitch. Chain 1 turn
Row 6 – *single crochet, double crochet* X3. Chain 1 turn.
At this point, my width of the strap is 4mm. If you wish to have wider strap, repeat increase the stitches at every last stitch of the row. Make sure the stitches count are even number.
Continue row 6 until the strap length approximate 160cm long or longer to your preference. Then we begin to decrease the strap to shape the pointy end same as the beginning.
Row 7 – make 1 more chain, skip first stitch, *double crochet, single crochet* X2, double crochet at the last stitch. Chain 1, turn.
Row 8 – Skip first stitch, *single crochet, double crochet* X2. Chain 2 turn.
Row 9 – Skip first stitch, double crochet, single crochet, double crochet. Chain 1, turn.
Row 10 – Skip first stitch, single crochet, double crochet. Chain 1. Cut the yarn with the length enough to wave in. Pull up and wave in the both ends yarn.
Strap completed and move to the bottom part.
Bottom
Fold the strap to half and mark the width of the waist piece you wish to wrap/cover. Measure a little bit shorter as your desire width because we will be create a little ruffle effect. Which mean the width will be longer once we crochet on the edge.
I marked my at 18cm X2 and my final measurement are 40cm on top & 70cm at bottom.
Row 1 : Single crochet along the edge where we pin the marking. 2 single crochet X2 at the big gap created from the double crochet, 1 single crochet at the small gap created from the single crochet. (Below pic for reference). Chain 1 turn.
Row 2 : *Single crochet, double crochet* repeat until reach the end. If your last stitch is single crochet, make 1 double crochet at the same last stitch. Chain 1, turn.
Row 3 : *Single crochet, double crochet* repeat till end. Chain 1, turn.
Repeat Row 3 until your preference length. I make my at 32cm length and I like to finish the last row facing right side.
Pocket(optional)
With same lemon peel stitch pattern, crochet a square for the pocket. You can also make 2 small squares and attach on the left and right apron. Play with your own creativity.
I make my at sizes 23cm X 15cm which ideally to fit in a phone.
Make sure the stitch count of a row are even numbers, begin with single crochet and end with double crochet. Finish last row with slip stitch slightly tighter tension (I go down a size of hook) to create nice edge of the pocket opening. Also to avoid the pocket flare.
Sew the pocket on and you are done!

So cute I will be making one of these, after I am done christmas presents. Lol
I am trying to make the lemon stich apron but I don’t understand the next step after crocheting the strap. Do you crochet a whole row of sc then it say sc in sc opening then 2 sc 2x in DC opening but the picture shows 2sc in 1 then 2sc Next then 1 scin next then it looks like 4 sc in dc opening.im just confused here
Hi. The 4sc you saw is actually 2sc X2 (times 2) as double crochet will created 2 opening up and down. I hope this explanation help.
I still don’t understand what I should do right after the strap is done can you tell my what to do on row 7 so that I can start the bottom section. Please and thank you. CareBear
Sorry I did not mean row 7. I meant Row 1 right after the strap.
Place marker as instructed. Slst to the first marker. Sc, 2sc, 2sc repeat till the other marker.
