Crochet Simple Poncho for Kid / Toddler

I been looking something to make for a winter weather as a X’mas gift for my friend’s daughter. Once I saw this Poncho For You And Me in Ravelry, I immediately added in my Que list. And another option is to design my own, a kid winter coat. After few thought while making few projects, I finally decided to make this Poncho.

The yarn I bought awhile back ago when this Denim Red colour of Ivy Wool Yarn back in stock at Cotton House Store online store. The colour from the website look more purplish red but when I received the yarn, it look more goldish pink. I don’t hate it or dislike it as it still pretty to put on a 2year olds girl.

Materials

  • Crochet Hook sizes 6.5mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Wool Yarn, Worsted weight (10ply) yarns X 6 skeins/100grams
  • 4 buttons
  • Scissors

Gauge : 10 sts sc x 11 rows sc = 3″ (1 inch smaller than the original pattern)

Finishes Sizes : 17″ long x 21.5″ width

Gauge

My gauge turn out an inch smaller as per the pattern. And I don’t want to increase my hook size just to obtain same gauge because I’m happy with the tension on the swatch piece. If I upside the hook, I will making them in very loose stitches. So I have to workout some math on the stitch count to archive the size for 2 years old. If you also having smaller gauge swatch and wanted to make the same sizes as mine, I had listed down what modification I had made.

Stitch Pattern

This poncho pattern shall be suitable for beginner level. The main pattern was workout pretty fast and easy with the textured stitch called griddle stitch / cobble stitch / lemon peel stitch. I’m not so sure which names is the correct one, but if you google and study the stitch pattern, there are same/similar. Which basically work with alternative of single crochet & double crochet.

Tip

The most killing part to work on this poncho is the ribbings. I go thru abit of the comments in the Ravelry, many giving up with the original slipstiches back loop only ribbing. They either go with single crochet back loop. I wanted to try this technic as I never try before. I like it more than the single crochet back loop only. The texture prettier and it is very stretchy. Although it took quite long time to crochet but after finished this poncho, I think I had master well the skill. One tip that I can share here is; for the first 2 rows of the ribbing, I started with the hook 1 sizes smaller. It is because I found that the tension for the beginning tent to be looser and it make one side of the edge longer. Practice make prefect! Trust me, I love this ribbing and already thinking to use it on my future projects which need or require stretchy ribbing.

I am having a difficult time following your pattern.🥲
How many do you chain at the beginning of you project, neck, body?
Do I follow the Raverly pattern but make your changes?
Help

Hi Sheila. I’m sharing this modified pattern because my gauge aren’t same as per original pattern. If you get the same gauge as Raverly pattern you shall follow the original stitch count.

I been looking for this pattern for awhile, I have 4 great-nieces that I would love to make this for. Thank you for your honesty in actually sharing your pattern, being deaf I can’t do
YouTube and I can’t find anyone to listen to YouTube for me because they work and have a family to take care of, so I really do appreciate you accepting sharing your pattern.
