I like Variegated yarn or Self-striping yarn as the uniqueness of the colour changed/mixed. But I hate how it turn out in certain way when the stitch pattern repeated consistently and the colours turned out to look patchy-patchy especially working in crochet stitches.
Ever since I designed my Cotton Candy Bag, I keep looking for stitch pattern that using the same construction idea which to combine a solid/plain colour yarn with variegated that suitable for wearable item, as the Cotton Candy Bag stitch pattern are hard and stiff. Also come across a query to me requested Cotton Candy bag in knit pattern, which is an interesting idea.
Recently I been playing around with variegated yarns that can be found in my stash, and I’m actually working on designing a crochet top but because I run out of the yarn and still waiting to get the yarn from supplier so I have to move to the next project. Time to dig in the yarn stash.
Yarn & Colours
Every time I went to Spotlight Store, my eye catched on the Malibu Yarn, especially this Pastel Mixed colourway. In early of 2021, I grab 2 balls of this Pastel Mixed and 2 balls of the white Mawson. Honestly, I bought it without any idea what to make, I just went to spend the members voucher ^^!!! But But But, so sorry to share this late because I just found out it is discontinued yarn. You may find similarity yarn type and weight here but may not the same colour.
Moda Vera Malibu 8Ply
- 100% wool
- DK (8ply)
- Recommend Needle size 4mm
I choose this white yarn together just to pair with the Pastel Mixed because I have a very rough idea to work with stripes pattern or something else, not the Pastel Mixed alone.
Moda Vera Mawson
- 50% Acrylic, 25% Alpaca, 25% wool
- Bulky (12ply)
- Recommend Needle size 7mm
About the colour knitting construction that you need to know.
- Not to worry about the complication, it is just garter stitch with alternative slip stitch row.
- Patterns repeats every 8 rows but you can stop at any row on main colour.
- Choose 2 colours yarn, main colour(colour A) & secondary colour(colour B). Secondary colour thicker than main colour, so that the purl stitches bumps of the secondary will pop out. If using same weight of yarn, the fabric result will different. Depend to you preference. Play around with swatch first as different fiber will give different outcome.
- Needle sizes follow the secondary yarn weight suggestion .
- Colour change every 2 row, so this pattern doesn’t require carrying / stranding yarn.
If working in the round
- Cast on even numbers of stitches.
- When you drop the main colour yarn, leave the yarn at the right side of work.
- When you drop the secondary yarn, leave the yarn at the wrong side of work.
- When slip stitch, keep the working yarn at the wrong side
If working flat
- Cast on multiple 2 stitch + 1 for the nice edges.
- When changing colour, drop colour A, bring up colour B under colour A, make sure not pulling too tight. Repeat same.
- When slip stitch, keep the working yarn at the wrong side

Hello
What is the wrong side? Slip the yarn purlwise with yarn in front or back?
Thanks 😊
Hi Teri,
Wrong side is the inside of the fabric/cloth.
If working in round you slip the yarn purlwise with yarn at back.
If you working flat, row 3 (right side facing you) you slip the yarn purlwise with the yarn at back. And row 4(wrong side facing you) you slip the yarn purlwise with the yarn at front.
I hope this help.
Happy knitting.
Is there a row 8 missing for working this pattern flat?
Thanks for point out Rachel.
Row 8 work as per Row 7.
